The Vitamin D group consists of fat-soluble prohormones that plays an important function in the organ system. It promotes the absorption of phosphorus and calcium levels within the blood. Additionally, it also promotes the reabsorption of calcium within the kidneys. This allows the bone to normally mineralize and aids in the prevention of hypocalcemic tetany, which is a condition that causes muscle spasms.

The D vitamin also helps the immune system as it promotes phagocyosis. This is the process in which foreign particles within the body are engulfed so that they may be ingested and therefore destroyed.

Vitamin D is produced naturally within the human body when it has been exposed to direct sunlight. It is important for people who have dark skin as well as older adults to obtain extra doses of the vitamin. For people that aren't able to gain exposure of direct light it is also possible to get the vitamin through your diet.
